The third annual Tand Invitational, presented by Sixty40 Bodyboarding Magazine, Zion
SA and the International Bodyboarding Association, in association with Red Bull, Kingdom Longboards, Bassett Stationers and Acorn Laser Engraving, is South Africa's
leading high-performance bodyboarding contest, and set to take place during a
three-week window period from 24 June to 14 July.
In order to ensure optimum swell and wind conditions for the event, organisers Jarret Johnson and Simon Heale have scheduled a three-week window period from 24 June to 14 July. "We're looking for a swell around the 3m mark with about a 12 second period," Johnson said. "A light northerly wind will be ideal, and then also clear skies and no rain would be a bonus."
Specker said that given the right conditions, spectators at the Tand Invitational could expect to see some of the most advanced riding that the sport of bodyboarding has to
offer. "The wave has a feeling of raw power," says Specker. "It's a short and intense ride with endless manoeuvre possibilities."
The 16 competitors will include the four finalists from last year's event, four impressive local riders and four wild card entrants selected at the discretion of the event
organisers. The remaining four competitors will be selected after a trial round
scheduled for 22-23 June.
According to Johnson, the trial round will give ordinary competitive riders the chance to
progress into the main event and have a shot at the first place prize of R20 000. Johnson urged fans and spectators to check the Tand Invitational's Facebook page for updates on
potential running dates and times for the contest. "We believe that
this year will see the best conditions possible for the event," says Johnson.
"It's an opportunity to watch South Africa's best riders compete at one of the
best waves in the country."
