Rockstar Games Pipeline Pro: Day One

Monday, January 9th 2006, day one of the Rockstar Games Pipeline Pro commenced in 3-5 ft. waves at the famed peak. With only a week long holding period and 3 days of competition to run, contest Director Bob Thomas had no choice but to start the event. Early morning action, round one of the trials, saw one of the best women Bodyboarders here at Pipeline , Japan 's Aoi Koike, fall short to Australian Aiden Taylor and USA 's Anthony Savoji, in a closely battled heat. With no Woman's Division scheduled because of time restraints, round one saw a slew of top women competitors taking on the men for the title. Standing her ground and winning Heat # 8, was Australian Kirra Llewellyn, who had a few nice combo's to edge out Donavan Bassett who got second and both advanced on to round # 2. Other round 1 standouts were California 's Ross McBride, Australian Robert Masters and Mexican competitor Jose Rutherford.

11:00am, Round # 2 started the same as round ended peaky 3-5 ft Pipeline; the winds, which seem to be coming in a more easterly direction picked up a bit from the morning, but nonetheless the competition was at its best. Californians that advanced through this round included Ross McBride, Tyler Wiemann, Anthony Savoji, and Mark Klein. The best highlight of round 2 was DK master Brandon Foster with his prone spin in the barrel at pipe which pushed him into Round 3!

Going onto Round 3 it was make it or break it to the next day for everyone. Adam "Crashy" Benwall scored a 9 in his heat which was the highest score of the day. The only Californians who have not been seeded higher from the trials to go onto the next day included Ross McBride and 662 soldiers Rusty Friesen and Zach Baz. The rest of the boys had to start packing their bags.

In the Aussie field Tate Martin, Adam Benwall, Trend Mitchell, Adam Lehman, and Thomas Robinson all had no problems advancing and the rider with the best heat of the day was Puerto Ricos Rafael Rivera getting a 9 and an 8.5 in the same heat!
