Organizers have been blessed with faultless conditions for the opening day of competition at Praia Grande (Big Beach) at the Sintra Portugal Pro, with cloudless skies and punchy 3-4 footers being the order of the day.
Rui Felix is the technical director of the ETB & Portuguese Surfing Federation and was excited about the conditions.
"Yes I am very happy. We have a big number of competitors, 130 men and over 40 girls. The wind has dropped so the conditions will be better today and I hope for the rest of the competition" he said.
Rounds 1-4 of the Men will be contested while the swell is up. The top 16 riders are seeded into round 8 and will feature later in the week.
Australian professional Andrew Lester was watching the first round heats and noted, "I've been coming to Sintra for a few years now and this is probably some of the best conditions I've seen for the contest. I hope it hangs around for the rest of the week."
