Reef/Science Biggest Wave Contest names top 3 Finalists
posted by Gareth White on 16th March 2008
Submissions into the Reef/Science Biggest Wave Contest officially closed on 7 March 2008 and here are the waves, selected by the judges, to have been the three Biggest Waves ridden, and captured on film, in South Africa over the last 8 months.
In no particular order we have...
A.

B.
Ishmael Grant surfing Bay View near Hermanus in the Western Cape - photo by Graeme Cox
C.
James Moolenschot also surfing Sunset Reef - photo by Shaun Timoney.
It was an arduous task eliminating from the more than 16 waves that made it through to the final judging stage of the event, but inevitably, mammoth rides were scrapped and the judges decided unanimously that the above mentioned waves were in fact the biggest ridden.
Judges took basic factors into consideration when choosing the finalists, but it was no easy task having so many good rides to choose from and the fact that judges could only rate the rides based on the photographs in front of them made the job even harder.
Factors taken into consideration were: -
- The angle at which the photograph was taken. Downward and upward angles often give viewers a false sense of size.
- The size of the wave once the rider had bottom turned.
The winner of the Reef/Science Biggest Wave Contest 07/08 will be announced directly after the briefing for the ,Sport Unlimited Cape Classic 08, at the Big Bay life-saving club in Blouberg on Thursday 20 March. The briefing kicks-off at 18:00 so why not pull past and show your support for our big wave hell men?
Now that all is said and done and the three finalists have been chosen we would like to know from you, the sixty40 reader, who of these three rode the biggest wave in South Africa?

As for the Biggest Wipe-Out Contest judges felt that we have two candidates worthy of consideration.
Firstly, Chris Dowe, who ate it during his first session at Sunset Reef:
And Peter Lambert, who took one for the team while trying to tame this West Coast Monster:
We would also like to know from you, who you feel deserves a Big old Bag of Carrots?
I would personally like to thank the riders for having the guts to ride these mountains and the photographers for spending hours in the sun, hoping to capture the “money shot”.
Take a look at the shot Graeme Cox submitted of Shaun Timoney standing in front of this beast. To me this photo says it all!
Lastly I would like to thank Reef Wetsuits and Science Bodyboards for having the balls to front the capital for this contest and Neels Smit for stepping up to the plate and contributing to our cause.
Thanks guys you’re all legends!
