The Ivan Friedman KwaZulu Natal Bodyboarding Champs has been run consistently for the last 3 years and has become a prestigious event on the bodyboarding calendar attracting top riders from KwaZulu Natal to compete for the provincial title.
KZN has for many years been the home of bodyboarding in South Africa. Big names and world champions have come from this part of the world, they include 2x world champion, Andre Botha and current GOB Tour contender Mark McCarthy just to mention a few. Other names include Jonathan "OROS" Oliff, Alistair Taylor, Derek Footit and Mike Van Huysteen.
The contest, which will be competed on 5-6 December, is run in memory of a friend, an athlete and inspiration to all, Ivan Friedman. Ivan was diagnosed with a rare case of cancer a few years ago and passed away some time afterwards. His passing was a major shock to the bodyboarding community.
Since his passing in 2007 the KZN Bodyboarding championships have been held in his memory. All funds raised for the event get donated to the Cancer Association of SA (CANSA) who use the proceeds to fight cancer and offer support to cancer sufferers.
