Well, the time has come for the Kalk Bay Shootout 2007! With this years contest being bigger and better! This year's event will have a window period that starts on the 13th August through to the 14th September 2007.
Here's some info about the contest:
THE PLACE:
Kalk Bay is a little fishing town that lies nestled at the bottom of the mountains in False Bay between Muizenberg and Fish Hoek. (Approx 25min drive from Cape Town City Centre). The town has an abundance of little curio shops and good restaurants that specialize in seafood.
THE SPOT:
Known as "The Reef" or "Kalk Bay Reef"
Because of Kalk Bay being situated in False Bay, the spot needs a fair bit of south direction in the swell before it turns on, however a huge W or SW swell on the Atlantic side of the Cape Peninsular can wrap around Cape Point and reach Kalk Bay but this often means long lulls between sets, not exactly what we looking for to run the contest. The more South in the swell, the more consistent it is. A NW wind is know to be offshore but as soon as it gets too hard it creates side chop which shuts down the wave. A Westerly wind blows straight down the valley and into the barrel at Kalk Bay. This is the ideal wind. Kalk Bay works on a low and high tide, however low tide is preferred among bodyboarders because this is when the wave is thick and shallow and can provide excellent barrels with big busting opportunities. The wave breaks left, sometimes with less than 40cm of water on the reef, which is covered full of red bait and sea urchins!
The wave breaks close to shore with a big raised parking lot that sits directly in front of the break making the venue great for spectators and competitors alike.

THE CONTEST:
The event will feature 20 South African explosive bodyboarders consisting of locals and non-locals. They will be battling it out, trying to impress the judges by finding the biggest barrel and hitting the thickest section in order to be one of the 4 finalists.
This year we are introducing a new format. A list of reserves. These riders will be on call throughout the waiting period and will be there on the morning of the contest. If a “listed” rider fails to show, the reserve rider will take his place. (There is quite a good chance of riders not showing due to last minute problems, so these riders have a good chance of riding)
All 'listed' and reserves that ride will have to pay the entry fee of R100.
