Reunion Island rider Amaury Laverhne today broke through for his maiden victory on the WMT by winning the final of the Sopelana Movistar Pro.
"I feel so good!! I am so happy. After Australia where I made a pretty bad result and Chile where I went OK I needed to do a good result here for the points", said Amaury.
"The conditions were really difficult. It was very hard for me and I am really stoked now. It was like 300 metres to paddle after each wave and I am very tired but also very happy. Now I have enough money to finish the tour off this year and I hope to continue my form into the contest at Sintra next week."
In stark contrast to Amaury's first ever win Australia's Former World Champion Kira Llewellyn secured her 20th career victory on the WWT.
"I'm so excited!! I trained pretty hard for this contest and after a bad result in Australia at the Ingles Pro I had to get a good one here. I had really hard heats all the way to the final and I won them all so I'm really happy about that. The conditions were really testing so it makes the win that much sweeter."
Despite the gloomy conditions a massive crowd was on hand to watch the event in the trashy 2 metre waves.
Crowd favourite Aritz Larrinaga had the Basque Country locals on their feet and cheering but just couldn't find the form that got him all the way to the final.
