McCarthy Wins R10 000 at the Anytime Holiday Bodyboarding Showdown

South African bodyboarding super star Mark McCarthy (Richards Bay) won the inaugural Anytime Holiday Rental Bodyboarding Showdown on the south coast on Friday in a large 1.5 to 2-metre waves at a secret surf spot on the KZN south coast. The event was a highlight of the FeverX Games from 11 - 19 Dec where various Xtreme sports were showcased.
“Anytime Holidays has been extremely proud of the high level of skill shown during the exciting finale of this Body Boarding Showdown and we wish all competitors everything of the best in their future competitions and look forward to them competing again next year. We would also like to take this opportunity to wish all holidaymakers a safe and pleasant journey this festive season,” commented Neville Beekman, Director of the Beekman Group which consists of Anytime Holiday Rentals, The Holiday Club, Body Bliss Spas and the Beekman Management Portfolio.
The 40-minute man on man final between Darren Halse (Amanzimtoti) and Mark McCarthy (Richards Bay) was tightly contested with big aerial manoeuvres and deep barrels the order of the day. In the end it was McCarthy who walked away with R10 000 in cash as well as the bragging rights for being the first ever Anytime Holidays Bodyboarding Showdown Champion. In the semi-finals Derek Footit (Uvongo) took third ahead of David Lee (Durban) in fourth.
Rayner Venter (Scottburgh) won the event’s Expression Session and walked away with a cheque for R500; Derek Footit (Margate) placed second with Warren van der Merwe (Richards Bay) taking third. The Heaviest Wipe-out award went to Terence Pieters (Uvongo) and Wesley Coetzee (Margate) won a prize for being the youngest competitor. The Close Call Award went to Brendon van Rooyen (Ramsgate) who had to have stitches as well as 20 injections to his face after hitting the reef.
